Wunderkammer: A Fusion of East and West in a Luxurious Residence

Creating a Timeless Vista of Beauty

The Wunderkammer design project, led by Han-Chung Liu and Ling-Fong Ko, is a testament to the seamless fusion of East and West in a luxurious residence. Inspired by the client's impeccable aesthetic taste and extensive art collection, the design team aimed to create a space that harmoniously blends strong color contrasts, naturalistic materials, and branded furniture.

In spite of the limited space area, the design team managed to create an infinite sense of space in the Wunderkammer residence. The entrance welcomes visitors with an exquisite vista piece of Oriental Romanticism, while the study features glass partitioning that enhances transparency. The main wall, adorned with high-quality materials, a master painting, and classic furniture, serves as a timeless vista of beauty, showcasing the meticulous fusion of East and West.

With the client's respect for the design profession, the design team was able to realize their material selections with great precision. The grandeur of the main wall in the living room stands as the centerpiece of the public area, complemented by large-capacity storage slots hidden behind multiple sliding doors. Additionally, two sets of inserted showcasing slotted cabinets create an art-gallery-like aura throughout the residence.

The Wunderkammer project began with a rigorous review of the space layout and plan. The design team allocated the majority of the space area to the public area, while the bedrooms area, with walk-in closets and bathrooms, was designed with practicality and security in mind. The result is a well-balanced and functional living space.

Integrating the full-height sliding door in the living room required careful consideration of weight-bearing capacity and ease of use. The metal piece of the study partitioning was treated with a special powder-spray-painted finish, showcasing the materiality and texture of the sanded surface, which greatly appealed to the occupants.

The Wunderkammer project took place in Taipei City, starting in October 2016 and finishing in February 2017. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research to ensure a seamless integration of the client's art collection with the space. The design team faced various challenges, particularly in the dining-kitchen areas and the bathroom, where water, electricity, and heating systems converge. Careful consideration of wiring and plumbing was necessary to address potential maintenance issues.

For the owner, who possesses a deep love for art and personalized aesthetic convictions, the key to the interior design of the Wunderkammer residence was to establish a connection between the owner's extensive art collection and the space itself. Despite the limited space, the design successfully reconfigured the interior layout to optimize the public domain, creating a sense of extension and readily accessible vistas throughout the interior.

The Wunderkammer design project, executed by Han-Chung Liu and Ling-Fong Ko, is a true masterpiece that showcases the fusion of East and West in a luxurious residence. With its meticulous attention to detail and seamless integration of the client's art collection, this design stands as a timeless vista of beauty.
